Top Coat
Furniture finishes come in two categories, penetrating and film. Penetrating oil finishes allow you to feel the wood but offer almost no protection. Film finishes cover the wood with a clear varnish coating and offer superior protection. Most Amish furniture finishing shops use conversion varnish to “topcoat” the wood after it’s stained. Conversion varnish is used by top end furniture makers for the excellent sealing and wear quality it provides to the consumer. It meets federal standards for Low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Hazardous Air Pollutants Standards (HAPS) to ensure the product is safe for your family.

The Benefits of our Fine Furniture Finish
Conversion Varnish is the most commonly used finish used in the high-end furniture market. When properly applied and cared for, the beauty of your furniture's finish will be enjoyed for many generations. Conversion Varnish has excellent resistance to foods, beverages and common household chemicals. However to maintain the beautiful appearance of your furniture, a few care guidelines must be followed.
· Excessive waxing can cause moisture from a beverage can or glass to leave a milky white ring on the surface.
· Do not use cleaners containing bleach.
· Avoid cleaners with abrasives, they may scratch the finish.
· Do not allow cleaners containing ammonia to come in contact with your furniture's finish. Ammonia may turn oak black and painted pieces yellow.
· Dyes and inks may discolor the finish. The ink and dyes from newsprint and plastic bags may penetrate into the finish when moist.
· Conversion Varnish offers a very hard mar resistant surface, but like any finish, it may still be scratched or damaged if not cared for properly.
COATING REPORT BETWEEN LACQUERS AND CONVERSION VARNISH
We use a conversion varnish rather than it’s cheap and low-quality substitute, lacquer.
Lacquer: A coating commonly used on furniture today. A low quality coating that does not offer much durability or moisture resistance.
Conversion Varnish: A coating that provides superior moisture resistance. A very high quality coating that will provide long life and durability to your furniture.
A comparison between the two types of products. (Scale of 1 to 10.) 1 = severe effect 10 = no effect

These are just some ways to show you the difference between these two products. The conversion varnish is a superior coating to any brand of lacquer.
Moisture Resistance
If a cup of water is left on the surface of a lacquer top over night, it will leave a white ring in the finish. If a cup is left on the surface of a conversion varnish finish for a week, there will be no effect to the coating. Conversion varnish is a coating that is durable enough to last the life of your furniture.

Oil Finish
This finish soaks deep into wood pores to provide protection from the inside out. Because it hardens inside the wood, it will never chip, peel or wear away. If the furniture is damaged, it can be repaired by the owner with little effort. We recommend maintaining the piece twice a year with a good quality oil polish.
